The U.S. reached the Games for a fifth successive time courtesy of a 3-0 win over plucky Costa Rica, who pushed their powerful opponents all the way.Hosts Canada, meanwhile, rode the support of a boisterous crowd at Vancouver’s B.C. Place and a pair of goals from Christine Sinclair to a 3-1 victory over Mexico.Canada and the U.S. will now meet in a pressure-free tournament final on Sunday, both countries having accomplished their objective of securing an Olympic berth. The U.S. had steamrolled into the final four, outscoring their opponents by an astonishing 31-0.But they ran into an inspired Costa Rica and the reigning Olympic champions were lucky to escape the opening half with a 1-0 lead after a 16th minute header from Tobin Heath. In seven meetings the Costa Ricans had never scored against the Americans, but came close twice in the opening half, forcing U.S. keeper Hope Solo to produce her some superb saves. The Central Americans kept the U.S. under considerable pressure after the break until the Americans finally seized control. The favorites added some insurance in the 72nd minute when Abby Wambach’s chip was cleared off the line and Carli Lloyd unleashed a rocket from the edge of the box for a 2-0 lead.Alex Morgan completed the scoring just before the final whistle.Unbeaten in group play, Canada came into the match full of confidence and quickly took the initiative. It took just 15 minutes, Sinclair driving home her eighth goal of the tournament from close range, followed by another from Melissa Tancredi just seven minutes later. Veronica Perez hauled Mexico back into the match when she jumped on a loose ball and smashed it through a crowded goal mouth in the 67th minute to trim the lead to 2-1. With the Canadians on their heels, Mexico continued to press, but Sinclair restored control, taking a superb feed from Tancredi and chipping it over a charging Mexican keeper. I didn’t want to think about it, the possibility of qualifying but this is incredible, Sinclair, told reporters as celebrations erupted on the pitch. When they scored, we never stopped fighting and we got one more there at the end to ice it.

Wade had been sidelined with an ankle injury but already looked back to his best as he and LeBron James (31 points) racked up 10 dunks and 59 points between them to condemn the Knicks to their eighth loss in nine games. At times, the Wade-James combination looked the best it has done this season, and left Miami coach Erik Spoelstra purring. They did a very good job of playing off each other, getting out in the open court, playing off each other on cuts in the half court and one guy being aggressive and the other guy playing off that, said Spoelstra. Then there at the end LeBron really has taken another step forward in terms of his aggressiveness.New York were without their leading forward Carmelo Anthony, who sat out the game with a wrist and ankle injuries and they relied heavily on three point shots – attempting 43 of them, the most in any NBA game this season, making 18.Bill Walker top scored for the Knicks with 21 points – all of them from beyond the arc – for New York, who have just one win this season over a team with a . 00 record. While the Knicks struggle, Miami, who have won five of their last six games at their American Airlines Arena, are starting to click and were clearly delighted to have Wade back.Spoelstra revealed after the game that the Heat had decided to give Wade an extended break in order to get his physical condition back to its best.We had a collective franchise decision on this – we were going to make sure that we would get his body right, he said. In normal years he would probably have tried to play in the Lakers game (on January 20) but we held him out another week just to make sure he felt right. Wade shot 11 of 19 on field goals and was on court for 32. 4 minutes looking sharp from the outset with an early dunk that brought a huge roar from the crowd. I just tried to be aggressive, after being out for a while, one of the best ways to get your rhythm is to attack the basket, said Wade. The Heat are now set for a clash with Eastern Conference leaders, the Chicago Bulls, on Sunday, a repeat of last season’s Conference Finals which Miami won before going on to lose to Dallas in the NBA Finals.

But Rafa Nadal would swap places with him in a heartbeat. The Spaniard, who will face Djokovic in Sunday’s Melbourne final, believes the world number one’s stellar run in 2011 would bring him confidence, not added pressure. It’s a fantastic situation to be in, Nadal told reporters on Saturday. It’s really not a tough one. When you are coming with that confidence everything is a little bit easier.Djokovic kicked off a career-defining year by winning the Australian Open and went on to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open while compiling a remarkable 70-6 record over the season.Nadal knows perhaps better than anyone what kind of impact such a streak of success can have on a player’s psyche. The Spaniard came into last year’s Melbourne Park tournament seeking the Rafa Slam after winning the final three majors of 2010.While he went out in the quarter-finals to David Ferrer, pressure had nothing to do with it, he says.I was a little bit unlucky here last year when I played for the grand slam, he added. I didn’t feel extra pressure. That’s true. I had an injury in the quarter-finals so I was out. I think for (Djokovic) it’s an advantage, not a pressure, to be in that situation. ‘BIG, BIG TEST’2Nadal, who arrived at his news conference an hour late after getting the time wrong, came into the year’s first grand slam under an injury cloud with shoulder and knee problems but has looked stronger as the tournament has gone on. Djokovic, meanwhile, has companied of allergy issues and his breathing looked labored in recent games, particularly in the early stages of his five-set semi-final win over Britain’s Andy Murray on Friday. Nadal was skeptical there was anything wrong with the Serb. It’s funny, I saw the match yesterday on TV … and they show images from two hours, 50 (minutes) before and it seems like he was destroyed, he said. Two hours, 50 later he was in perfect condition. So it’s difficult to imagine he has these problems.Nadal holds the upper hand against Djokovic at 16 wins to the Serb’s 13, but recent finals have gone the way of the world number one.The Mallorcan acknowledged there would be no quarter asked or given on Sunday. He is the favorite after being number one in the world and after playing fantastic and beating me the last six times, added Nadal, who beat Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych in the previous two rounds. Now it’s another big, big test. I don’t know if I am ready enough to win the match tomorrow but I believe that I can do it and I am going to fight for it.

The 62-year-old billionaire sat courtside at the American Airlines Arena on Miami’s waterfront to watch an NBA basketball game between the New York Knicks and the star-studded Miami Heat team, which he owns along with roughly half of the global cruise line industry.Arison has been heavily criticized in media reports for failing to put in an appearance at the site of the accident, as bodies were still being pulled from the wrecked ship operated by Carnival unit Costa Cruises. But the invisible CEO, as he was dubbed in one report, looked cheerful at times and very calm, as he watched the Heat beat the Knicks from his courtside perch behind a broadcast table.Clad in a sport coat and open-necked shirt, Arison appeared to exchange few words with anyone and left the arena immediately after the game ended. At least 16 bodies have been recovered since the massive Costa Concordia cruise liner, with more than 4,200 passengers and crew aboard, capsized after a gaping hole was torn into its hull. The ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest and has been widely blamed for the accident for steering too close to the Tuscan island’s shore.Arison has expressed his condolences in statements issued since the Costa Concordia wreck and given personal assurances that all victims of the tragedy would be taken care of.

While Wade sat on the sidelines, there had been chatter on the airwaves and social networks over the idea that the Heat are better without Wade.It is a notion the seven-times All Star guard Wade said was ridiculous. That’s all I’ve got to say about that, he told reporters. This is a very good team, with or without me. But better without me? I doubt that.Wade joined in some of the more light-hearted debate with fans on twitter, poking a little fun at the idea.I had nothing else to do but watch television, I watched a lot of sport and it came up every second. It’s all fun … something to laugh about and I thought I’d get in on the joke, he said.Wade says the reason the Heat have done so well without him is simply that they have a lot of other options.I have a lot of confidence in my team, we have a very deep team, we have a lot of guys on our bench that are not playing as many minutes as I am sure they would love and you look at our roster and it goes deep, he said. The ankle injury that kept Wade out was perhaps not as serious as his six-game absence suggests and head coach Erik Spoelstra said that at least part of his time on the sideline was used to get his overall physical condition to a peak.Wade said he had certainly benefitted from the break. It was, everything happens for a reason. It took a real, painful ankle injury to let me sit out, work on my body, get healthy, lose a couple of pounds and I worked hard to make sure that I came back better than I was. I wouldn’t say I am glad it happened but it was beneficial for my health and the way I feel, he said.

Local television said one policeman died from head injuries after clashes in the capital Dakar. Reuters reporters saw youths set fire to tires and overturn cars after a ruling of the West African country’s Constitutional Council late on Friday night.Rivals to 85-year-old Wade say the constitution sets an upper limit of two terms on the president. Wade, who came to power in 2000 and was re-elected in 2007, has argued his first term pre-dated the 2001 amendment establishing the limit.Senegal’s Constitutional Council validated his candidacy and that of 13 rivals for the February 26 vote but turned down the presidential bid of world music star Youssou N’Dour, saying he had not gathered the required 10,000 signatures of support.N’Dour called on his supporters to prevent the elections from going ahead. We will never allow Abdoulaye Wade to take part in the election, he said, speaking on his own TFM television channel. The decision to keep me out had nothing to do with the law. It was a political decision and we will reply with a political decision, he said, without giving further details.Senegal is the only country in mainland West Africa to have not had a coup since the end of the colonial era. February’s poll, and a possible run-off a few weeks later, are seen as major test of social peace in the predominantly Muslim country.WADE URGES CALMOne witness said a police station in the central town of Kaolack had been ransacked, while state radio said the local headquarters of Wade’s liberal PDS had been burned down. Street protests were also reported in the towns of Thies and Mbour. Wade has no right to a third term and the people will resist this, Moustapha Niasse, a former prime minister for Wade who is now challenging him for the presidency, said. Wade appeared on state television and made an appeal for calm, promising that the elections would be free and fair. Stop these displays of petulance which will lead to nothing, he said. The electoral campaign will be open. There will be no restrictions on freedom. The Council validated 13 other candidates including Socialist Party leader Ousmane Tanor Dieng, Niasse and two other ex-prime ministers – Idrissa Seck and Macky Sall. Its five judges, all selected by Wade, said authorities had been unable to identify around 4,000 of some 12,000 signatures gathered by N’Dour, meaning his candidacy was invalid. We are here to protest against Wade, Yero Toure, a 26-year-old student at an opposition rally of a couple of thousand people in central Dakar before the ruling. If they don’t reject him the people will rise up against him.Critics say that Wade, who spent 26 years in opposition to Socialist rule, has done nothing during his 12 years in power to alleviate poverty in a country where formal employment is scarce, and has dragged his heels on tackling official graft.Wade points to spending on education and infrastructure projects such as roadbuilding as proof of progress towards turning Senegal into an emerging market country and a trade hub.His candidacy has raised eyebrows abroad. The senior U.S. State Department official for Africa, William Fitzgerald, told French RFI radio this month Washington viewed it as a bit regrettable. From our point of view it was the right moment to go into retirement, to protect and support a good transition – democratically, peacefully, safely, Fitzgerald said.

The revelations surfaced as the older of the two Roy High School students arrested on Wednesday, Dallin Morgan, 18, was charged by Weber County prosecutors with possession or use of a weapon of mass destruction.Morgan posted $10,000 bail on Friday and was released from the Weber County jail, Utah State Courts spokeswoman Nancy Volmer said. The 16-year-old boy arrested with him, Joshua Hoggan, remained held at a juvenile detention center, where he was booked on suspicion of conspiracy, Volmer said. It was unclear if he had been formally charged.Police in Roy, 30 miles north of Salt Lake City, have said the two students were not found to have any explosives in their possession after they were pulled out of classes and arrested on Wednesday following a tip from another student. But authorities said investigators had found evidence that the two youths had plotted to set off explosives during a school assembly and make their getaway in a stolen airplane.Charging documents filed against Morgan said that he did conspire to use a weapon of mass destruction. The arrest affidavit said that one of the students, whose name was blacked out on the document, had told investigators he was fascinated by the Columbine High School shooting spree. Two Columbine students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, shot 12 classmates and a teacher to death before killing themselves on April 20, 1999, in what then ranked as the deadliest outburst of school gun violence in U.S. history. Harris and Klebold also set off makeshift bombs fashioned from propane canisters. The accused Roy High School student said to have been inspired by the Columbine massacre also told investigators he had flown to Denver and paid a visit to Columbine High to interview the principal there. It was confirmed by Columbine principal Frank DeAngelis that (the unnamed student) arrived on December 12, 2011, at 11 a.m. to interview him about Columbine’s mass killing, the affidavit said. It also revealed that at least one of the two accused students sent text messages to a third pupil before their arrest. One of those messages said, Dallin is in on it. Another said, He wants revenge on the world, too. Police have said the two accused students had planned to escape after attacking their school by commandeering a plane from nearby Ogden-Hinckley Airport, a general aviation airfield. They trained for that plan with the aid of a computer flight simulator, police said. The text messages cited in the affidavit also pointed to the possibility of a plane being used. We ain’t gonna crash it, we’re just gonna kill and fly our way to a country that won’t send us back to the U.S., the affidavit quoted one of the students as writing in a text message. Police have not disclosed the date that they suspect the two students were planning to strike.

A new 300,000 square foot building will consolidate into one site the satellite offices employing some 800 researchers, most of them focused on biology, who are currently scattered around the San Francisco Bay Area. It could eventually grow up to 2 million square feet and involve researchers in other fields, according to planning documents released by the lab on Thursday.Founded by cyclotron inventor Earnest O. Lawrence in 1931, the laboratory at first focused on nuclear energy but has gradually diversified and is now as much known for microscopy and nanotechnology as it is for energy. The new campus will begin with work on biofuels, genomics and cancer research, said laboratory director Paul Alivisatos. The lab has been so successful that it’s branching out in all directions, said Raymond L. Orbach, director of the Energy Institute at the University of Texas, Austin, and a former undersecretary for science in the U.S. Department of Energy. It’s quite unusual for one lab to contribute across the spectrum, he added.Thirteen Nobel laureates have worked at the lab, which is primarily funded by the Department of Energy but run by the University of California. After stagnating for a decade, U.S. funding for energy research will rise to $4. billion in 2012 from about $3. billion in 2007, said Matt Hourihan, a budget analyst for the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. There is bipartisan support for energy research, he said. The site in Richmond is already owned by the University of California, so the laboratory will not need to pay for its purchase. The lab is working now to set a budget for the new building, said lab spokesman Jon Weiner. The laboratory’s budget for 2011 was $735 million, with an additional $101 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, for a total of $836 million. Its 2012 budget has not yet been set, said Weiner. If we work hard together and make this long-range development plan, start to secure the financing and work our way through the environmental impact studies, and get all the input from the community, I’m optimistic we will be back here in 2016 opening the doors to the campus, said Alivisatos. The construction and staff spending associated with the new campus is expected to boost the economy of Richmond, which has struggled with high unemployment.
